The mare Drop The Hammer was a talented dual-purpose performer, who showed a lot of admirable qualities during a 33-race career. She was sharp enough to finish second over seven-furlongs at Newcastle on her two-year-old debut, and later won three times on the flat at up to two miles as a three and four-year-old.
Her focus was briefly switched to jumping, and she proved herself equally adept at the winter game by winning a two mile two-furlong novices' handicap hurdle at Sedgefield as a five-year-old.
More recently Drop The Hammer has produced various progeny by the crack stayer Geordieland, including this superb colt, and there are certainly grounds for believing that she can go on to enjoy a successful breeding career.
In fact, her son General Probus, a full-brother to the individual for sale and first foal of the dam, finished 4th on debut in a warm Exeter novice hurdle over 2m. It was a very eyecatching debut for a big horse that looks every inch a future staying chaser, with the winner being the promising J P McManus owned Sporting John.
Drop The Hammer is out of the dual winner Paperweight, whose second dam Crystal Bright was a noted producer. That mare gave four winners including the dual Grp-3 winner and Grp-1 1,000 Guineas third Crystal Gazing - who has herself gone on to foal numerous winners including the dual Grp-3 winning and Grp-1 placed sprinter Conroy. Other classy operators to emerge from this branch of the family include the smart stayer Elegiac, winner of the Listed Further Flight Stakes at Nottingham, and the Grp-3 Craven Stakes hero Killybegs.
Adding to this youngsters appeal on paper is the bright start that Geordieland has made to his stallion career. As mentioned above, he was a top-flight stayer, who won at Grp-2 level on three occasions and was placed in the Grp-1 Ascot Gold Cup three times.
Now standing as a stallion at Beech Tree Stud, his two flat runners in Britain have both won, whilst his exciting young stock emerging over jumps includes the 140-rated Venetia Williams trained hurdler Geordie B.
This very attractive sort is the product of a tough and talented dam, and a sire who is clearly getting the very best out of every mare he visits. It looks like a winning combination, which should ensure that this youngster has a very bright future ahead of him.
