Affordable shares are available in a lovely three-year-old filly by Royal Anthem out of the three-time winning mare Apsara. The youngster is set to be trained by the Devon-based Paul George, who burst onto the scene when taking out his licence in 2018 and has maintained the momentum since.
The filly has recently been broken in and is now cantering away, displaying a brilliant temperament and showing lots of promise. She has been given all the time she needs, but is now ready to kick on with.
The dam Apsara was initially trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil, for whom she finished second behind the subsequent dual Grp-3 winner Tartouche in a Kempton maiden on debut, before easily accounting for 10 rivals in a mile and a quarter Pontefract maiden on her second start.
At the close of her three-year-old campaign she was moved on to the stable of George Moore, and she went on to win a pair of mile handicaps as a five-year-old. She continued to race until the age of seven, advertising her versatility by placing over hurdles and even running over fences before retirement.
Apsara has since produced a handful of foals, but has only had one runner to date. However, her pedigree indicates that there is a good deal to look forward to once her offspring race in greater numbers.
That is because she is one of six successful progeny out of the four-time winner Ayodhya, who was in turn a sibling of the smart flat horse and Grade-1 placed hurdler Dromod Hill - who also went on to produce winners over jumps as a stallion. This prolific family can be traced back to the Listed-winner Keshcorran.
Apsara is a daughter of the high-class sire Groom Dancer, whose influence remains keenly felt as a broodmare sire under both codes. Amongst the best horses his daughters have produced on the level are the Grp-1 Dewhurst Stakes winner Tout Seul, the dual Grp-2 winning stayer Saddler's Rock and the Derby third Galileo Rock. Over jumps he is responsible in this sense for the Grade-1 winning hurdlers Grumeti and Mr Adjudicator.
Also making a name for himself over jumps is Royal Anthem, the brilliant eight-length winner of the Grp-1 Juddmonte International. A good enough stallion to produce the triple US Grade-1 winning flat performer Presious Passion earlier in his career, he is now firmly established as a reliable NH stallion in the UK. His best runners include the 142-rated hurdler Rattan and the 142-rated chasers Theatrical Moment and Princeton Royale. His stock are tough and durable and he looks a fine match for a mare such as Apsara.
This three-year-old filly is blessed with the looks, attitude and pedigree to make a serious racehorse. The patient approach to her development is sure to reap dividends further down the line and she appears to be a smashing short and long-term prospect.
