Just 15% is left for sale in Lets Be Lucky Racing's exciting Dawn Approach four-year-old Western Dawn! A Horses In Training Sale acquisition by the syndicate earlier in the year, he has since been gelded and sent to the North Yorkshire base of trainer Phil Makin. The horse has done nothing but please Phil and his partner and assistant Sammy Jo Bell since arriving in the yard, he is working like the good horse he is and at this stage Phil thinks he's much better than his handicap mark.

Western Dawn was trained by Jim Bolger to win a six-furlong Naas maiden last year, and after just a handful of career starts he retains lots of potential. He is out of the unraced Gone West mare Yes Oh Yes. He is therefore a half-brother to the four-time winner and formerly 91-rated Theodorico - who remains competitive this season at six years of age, which hints at the potential for Western Dawn to continue to progress.
They hail from a prolific black-type producing family and it is worth remembering that Gone West is the legendary broodmare sire of the likes of Derby winner Motivator, Gold Cup hero Order of St George and Dubai World Cup victor African Story, amongst many others.
A fine pedigree is backed up by form with substance. Western Dawn had one run as a two-year-old, before winning the aforementioned Naas maiden in very authoritative style on his 2019 comeback run. His victims on that occasion included the subsequent winners Sonaiyla, Empire State, Baladiya (twice), Kattani, Twenty Minutes and Philipine Cobra. In short, this was a red-hot piece of form and marked Western Dawn out as a potentially smart animal.
He was fourth behind the now 95-rated King's Dawn over seven-furlongs on his next start, before running a little below par at Leopardstown on his final run before the sales when he was not suited by the fast ground.
Phillip Makin advised that this is a 'proper horse' and encouraged the Lets Be Lucky team to go all in at the sales as Western Dawn 'could be anything'. A big, strong and attractive horse, he has a clean medical history and is sure to improve further after a recent gelding operation.
Western Dawn rates one of the most exciting purchases the Lets Be Lucky Racing team has ever made. He has been given a short break after working his way down to a good mark (67, was 86) , he also had a little niggles sorted out and will be stepping up his work soon. We expect him to be winning races early in the turf season.
