A share has become available in the high-class dual-purpose performer Solo Saxophone! Trained by Ben Haslam for Golden Equinox Racing, the seven-year-old son of Frankel has become a real money-spinner for connections and promises plenty more for the future!
A useful flat maiden for Dermot Weld as a three-year-old, Solo Saxophone gained distinction when sent juvenile hurdling in 2017, as he became the first offspring of the great Frankel to win under NH rules. He did so by four lengths on his hurdling debut at Catterick, before following up at Wetherby on his very next start.
He continued to show useful form over hurdles subsequently, winning competitive handicaps at Wetherby and Hexham in 2019 and reaching a career-high mark of 132 after a fabulous second at Southwell on his most recent appearance over obstacles.
However, perhaps even more remarkable has been Solo Saxophone's progress on the flat. He has been campaigned exclusively on the level since joining the Ben Haslam team earlier this year, and the results have been nothing short of extraordinary.
He hosed up in a mile-and-a-half Thirsk handicap on his stable and seasonal debut in mid-June, before winning comfortably when upped to two miles at Haydock the following week. The hat-trick was easily completed at York the following month, an effort which saw him propelled to a rating of 94.
The handicapper had not yet got to grips with this relentless improver, however. He was then third in the Brown Jack handicap at Ascot, before rounding out his season with another second at York and an easy seven-length victory in a Class 3 handicap at Newmarket under Ryan Moore.
Solo Saxophone now finds himself rated 98 on the flat, having improved his rating by a total of 26lbs during the 2020 season. His career record now reads eight wins from 26 starts, plus 10 other placings, and he has accumulated the best part of £60,000 in win and place prizemoney.
An owner's dream, this classy operator has taken his connections to Ascot, Cheltenham, Newmarket and York, plus plenty of places in between, and at seven years of age and in the form of his life, there is the tantalising prospect of more to come.
