An exciting and affordable ownership opportunity is presented by young Newmarket trainer James Ferguson. A total of 45 shares are available in the highly talented eight-year-old Leader Writer, who has recently been gelded and has dual-purpose potential going forward.
A son of the leading sire Pivotal, Leader Writer began his career in France where he won three times and showed very smart form on numerous occasions.
As a two-year-old he was beaten just a head in the Listed Prix des Sablonnets, whilst at three he was once again Listed-placed as well as finishing just five lengths behind the Grp-1 winner and 2,000 Guineas runner-up Territories in the Grp-3 Prix de Fontainebleau, a recognised Classic trial.
At four Leader Writer was twice more Listed-placed at up to a mile, before transferring to Britain midway through his five-year-old season in 2017.
He began his career in the UK from a rating of 95, and within three starts had won a valuable class 2 0-105 mile handicap at Ascot, with the future Royal Hunt Cup winner Afaak amongst those trailing in his wake.
Leader Writer continued to run generally consistently in the aftermath of that victory over the next two seasons, although his progress was hampered by a high rating. As such, he was even given three spins over hurdles towards the end of 2018/early 2019. Although he failed to pull up any trees at the time, he is now on course for an extremely appealing handicap rating over hurdles should he be pointed in that direction in the future, as seems likely.
Any concerns that Leader Writer's best days are behind him were emphatically dispelled with a victory at Windsor in October of 2019, where he made light of testing conditions to saunter past his rivals for an easy victory. Despite that success, he remains on a rating of just 77, which is still a long way below his peak.
Leader Writer was purchased by James at the Horses In Training Sale subsequent to his Windsor victory and has since been gelded. If that procedure leads to a little improvement, then there is every chance that he can make a mockery of his current rating, whilst he also has the option of going hurdling as discussed above. One way or another, he seems sure to provide syndicate members with an awful lot of value for money.
His trainer James Ferguson, son of leading bloodstock agent John, has compiled an enviable CV having assisted and worked for leading names such as Sir Mark Prescott, Charlie Appleby, Brian Meehan and Jessica Harrington. Now setting out on his own from Saville House Stables in Newmarket, there could not be a more exciting time to be joining the ambitious trainer and his dedicated team.
Each share in 'The Leader Writer Group' costs £1,000 plus VAT, a fee which will cover all costs until the end of October next year. At the end of that period, the management will decide whether the horse is sold or will remain in training. Join the syndicate to gain exclusive access to an up and coming racing yard, and to enjoy perks such as seeing the horse in action on the track and guided visits of the stables.
