An exciting opportunity is presented to take nominations in the Grp-2 Richmond Stakes winner and Claremount Stud resident Barraquero. A high-class juvenile and natural heir to his late sire Zebedee, Barraquero is currently standing his first season at a fee of €4,000 - and is offered on an extremely generous 'pay when you sell' basis!
We understand that in the current climate that you are finding the decision hard as to whether or not to cover your mare/filly and we would like to show our support to those breeders by offering a range of deals/payment terms.
The runner-up Nebo would go on to win the Grp-3 Horris Hill Stakes later in the season and the third home Cardsharp - who had defeated Champion Two-Year-Old U S Navy Flag in the Grp-2 July Stakes on his preceding start - went on to finish third in the Grp-1 Middle Park Stakes. In short, this was a superb piece of juvenile form.
Regrettably, Barraquero was only seen on a racecourse once more subsequently, but he retired with an enviable record that ensured his place at stud awaited. He won two of his four starts, all over six-furlongs, accumulating over £100,000 in prizemoney and earning a peak official rating of 111.
In addition to a fine racing record, Barraquero boasts a pedigree which promises speed and precocity in abundance.
He is out of the seven-furlong winning Oasis Dream mare Chica Whopa, who is herself a sibling of the six-furlong Listed-winning two-year-old and Grp-3 placed sprinter Jezebel. Their dam Just Ice was also a six-furlong Listed-winning juvenile, whilst the next generation of the family features the Grp-2 Lowther Stakes third Always On A Sunday and the Listed National Stakes winner Signs.
Barraquero's sire Zebedee won six times as a two-year-old, including the Grp-2 Flying Childers Stakes, before retiring immediately to stud at an initial covering fee of €5,000. He proved an instant hit, with his first crop featuring the Grp-2 Richmond Stakes winner and Grp-1 and Classic-placed Ivawood and the Grp-2 winning and Grp-1 placed sprinter Magical Memory.
Zebedee soon saw his covering fee double and his reputation as a high-quality source of speed and precocity secured, prior to his untimely death at the age of 11. His only entire son of comparable ability to Barraquero that has previously gone to stud is the aforementioned Ivawood. His first-crop last year featured the Listed winners Sopran Ival and Chares - to confirm the potency of the line - and Ivawood started his covering career at a fee of €9,000.
The last figure highlights the exceptional value that Barraquero offers breeders as he embarks on his maiden season at stud. He was an enormously talented and precocious performer, who boasts exceptional good looks and descends from the proven Invincible Spirit and Oasis Dream speed lines.
