A six-year-old gelding by Sepoy, Punkawallah is offered for sale.
A dual winner on the flat, he has now shown great potential as a
jumper with a staying-on second on his hurdling debut at Exeter. It
was an immensely promising performance and one that suggests he has
a big future over obstacles.
The six-year-old gelding stands a well-built 16.2hh, has no injuries or blemishes (save for a hardened off splint) and is open to vetting; he underwent a hobday/soft palate wind procedure in July 2019.
Initially trained by Tom Dascombe, Punkawallah showed signs of promise in a pair of starts as a juvenile before winning twice over a mile and a quarter at Haydock as a three-year-old, and ascending to a career-high rating of 75.
He changed hands towards the end of 2018, and went on to place at a mile and three-quarters for trainer Alexandra Dunn in the months following. Punkawallah has been amateur ridden of late, which has coincided with a slight dip in form and an official rating drop to just 53 on the fllat. A versatile sort in terms of trip, track and underfoot conditions, this horse now looks particularly well-handicapped and can surely regain the winning thread soon.
Prior to that exciting start to his jumping career at Exeter, Punkawallah had been well schooled over poles, showing natural ability and enthusiasm. He was not without promise in two further runs over hurdles earlier in the NH season and has now been allotted an official rating of 111.
Recently returned from a winter break, Punkawallah looks sure to be competitive from that mark in handicap hurdles. He has also been schooled over fences - showing a real aptitude for the job - and is ready to go novice chasing should connections desire. He even possesses a hunter chasing certificate in case that is the preferred option.
This horse is easy to do in every way, loves his work and takes everything (including farm and road hacks, traffic, underfoot water and travel) in his stride, all of which bodes well for a future over obstacles.
Only for sale as his regular amateur partner will not be available to ride, this genuine horse would make a super addition to any yard. He is a versatile sort who will be winning again soon and has an exciting and varied future ahead of him.
Currently in training with Alex Dunn, with plans to run until sale.
