The winning five-year-old Cross Step is offered for sale. A gelded son of Kitten's Joy, he has recently returned from a spell in Dubai and offers plenty of potential as a dual-purpose prospect. Cross Step began his career in the care of Charlie Appleby and running in the Godolphin blue. He was a promising fifth on his only start as a two-year-old before breaking his duck at the third attempt in a mile and three-furlong Lingfield turf maiden at three. Those performances earned him an initial rating of 85, and he went on to finish just one place behind the recent Royal Ascot hero The Grand Visir when fifth at Newbury on his handicap debut. Transferred to Dubai towards the end of 2017, he remained in the Emirates until early 2019, with his mark gradually declining. In two starts back in the UK his rating has dropped to a career low of 65, and he now looks particularly well-handicapped. Cross Step is out of the unraced Arch mare Maid Service and hails from an excellent North American family. His near relations include the Grade-1 winners Hymn Book, Data Link and even the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Caledonia Road.
He clearly has the scope to improve past his lowly mark once again, on turf or synthetics, whilst his sire has already produced the US Grade-1 winning hurdler Diplomat - from just a handful of representatives over jumps - to suggest that a switch of codes might also bear fruit at some point. Cross Step is a good, solid and sound horse, who realised $375,000 when auctioned as a yearling. He is on offer at a fraction of that price now and will do someone proud.
