2019 Colt by Equiano (Fr) Ex Babycakes (Ire)

A high-quality two-year-old colt by Equiano is offered for sale.

This impressive individual is out of the Marju mare Babycakes, who progressed through the handicap ranks to win in Listed company in France as a four-year-old.

Babycakes is a sibling of five winners including the dual Listed scorer Rosaleen, and the family extends back to numerous other black-type winners.

Since having her attentions switched to breeding, Babycakes has produced one runner, namely the lightly-raced Henrythenavigator mare Babamunchkin. She was fourth in a seven-furlong Newmarket maiden on her racecourse debut, making much of the running, and also went close at Pontefract at three.

Although yet to be represented by many runners, Babycakes' progeny have certainly turned heads in the auction ring. Her first foal, a 2013-foaled full-brother to the yearling colt available for auction, realised €90,000 as a yearling, whilst her 2015 colt, also by Equiano, made €73,000 at the same stage.

The exemplary record of Marju as a broodmare sire is also worthy of comment. The St James's Palace Stakes winner and leading sire is responsible for the dams of Grp-1 winners such as Canford Cliffs, Ribchester and Marsha - the latter of whom was by Acclamation, the sire of Equiano.

Equiano was a top-class sprinter who won the Grp-1 King's Stands Stakes at both three and five years of age. He retired to Newsells Park Stud in 2011 and has since developed a reputation as a very classy and dependable source of speed, whose progeny continue to progress with age. He now has well over two dozen stakes performers to his name.

Equiano's best runners to date are the triple Grp-1 winning sprinter The Tin Man, the Grade-1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint heroine Belvoir Bay, and the Grp-1 placed sprinters Strath Burn and Equliateral.

This racy and attractive colt is blessed with a very speedy pedigree and will surely develop into a useful performer in the future.
