Dam Sire: Clodovil (Ire)
A February-foaled daughter of Mehmas is offered for sale. She is trained by Jonathan Portman from his Lambourn base and appears to be a very sharp type who displays an excellent temperament. She is being sold to stay in the yard at £18,000 plus VAT but share options will be considered.
The trainer is noted for his deft touch with two-year-olds, having guided the careers of pattern winning juveniles Mrs Danvers and Royal Razalma.
The dam Drifting Spirit was a useful performer for Richard Fahey who progressed throughout her two-year-old campaign. Having got off the mark in a seven-furlong Beverley maiden at the fourth attempt, she went on to win nurseries at Newmarket on both the July Course and the Rowley Mile. Her juvenile exploits helped her ascend to a peak career rating of 90 and she earned just shy of £30,000 during a 12-race career.
Drifting Spirit is one of just a handful of runners out of Laureldean Spirit, who was a €150,000 yearling that never finished out of the money in four starts, including when fourth at Glorious Goodwood. The reason for her costly price tag is that she is a sibling of the Grp-1 Falmouth Stakes and Grp-2 Lowther Stakes heroine Nahoodh. That top-class mare has gone on to produce numerous winners in her own right, including the 108-rated Listed-winning miler Hawkesbury.
Excellent credentials on the distaff side are boosted by a match with an exciting young stallion whose first-crop runners are awaited with anticipation next year.
From just eight starts Mehmas won the Grp-2 Richmond Stakes and the Grp-2 July Stakes, as well as finishing second in the Grp-1 National Stakes and third in the Grp-1 Middle Park Stakes. He was retired to stud at the close of his two-year-old campaign, aiming to capitalise on the surging popularity of sons of Acclamation at stud.
Like Acclamation's most famous stallion son, Dark Angel, he is out of a Machiavellian mare and he hails from the family of luminaries such as Avenir Certain, Blue Monday, Luso, Warrsan and Needle Gun. Clearly his prospects appear outstanding on paper, and this has translated to sales ring success with his progeny realising as much as 260,000gns at the recent Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale.
This filly shows all the right attributes and has a very appealing pedigree. As the product of a precocious stallion and a mare that achieved her best form at two, she looks highly likely to reward her owners with some excitement next year.
