Dam Sire: Montjeu (Ire)
This beautiful foal is being offered by Frederique Siegl's stud which is located near Moulins in the Auvergne region of France, a 2 ½-hour drive south of Paris. Set in idyllic rural surroundings, the farm has proved to be a perfect place to rear foals in recent years and is where M. Siegl tends to his seven thoroughbred broodmares. The stud is currently represented by seven horses in training.
A March-foaled son of Goken, this impressive and athletic-looking individual is out of the Montjeu mare Halong Bay. The mare was a three-time winner over a mile when trained in France, achieving her most notable success in the Listed Premio Pietro Bessero in Italy.
Halong Bay is one of seven winners out of the Singspiel mare Lorigane, who was in turn a half-sister to the Listed scorer Learson. The family extends back to a plethora of black-type earning and stakes-winning animals.
Since having her attentions switched to breeding Halong Bay has produced a pair of winners and her progeny have realised up to €60,000 when sold at public auction. On this occasion Halong Bay has been matched with Goken, a tremendously fast sprinter who is currently standing his fourth season at stud in France.
On the racecourse Goken won the Grp-3 Prix du Bois as a two-year-old and the Grp-3 Prix Texanita at three. He is perhaps best remembered, however, for his notable efforts in defeat, which included a third in the Grp-1 King's Stand Stakes and a fourth in the Grp-1 Prix Morny.
His first yearlings went to auction in 2019 and proved a particular hit at the Arqana Deauville Yearling Sale, where they sold for figures including €50,000, €48,000 and €42,000.
Halong Bay's legendary sire Montjeu needs little introduction as a broodmare sire influence, given that his mares have produced countless top-quality animals such as the Grp-1 winners Charm Spirit, Legatissimo, Journey, Obviously, Parish Hall etc.
However, it is worth dwelling for a moment on the excellent record Montjeu mares have when paired with Kendargent, who happens to be the sire of Goken.
This nick has previously resulted in the brilliantly fast two-year-old Restiadargent, winner of the Grp-2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and Grp-3 Prix d'Arenberg, the dual Grp-3 winner Soleil Marin, the Listed-placed sprinter Largent Du Bonheur and the Grp-3 placed Kenriya.
Add in several other individual winners and it is clear that this is an exceptionally potent nick, whilst the stamina influence of Montjeu is evidently no barrier to speed and precocity in this instance. Such information bodes extremely well for the Halong Bay / Goken pairing.
This superb colt has lots of quality and a very exciting profile on paper. He looks sure to make up into a smart runner in the future. Please get in touch for more details.
