The superb unraced three-year-old Night Of Thunder filly Distant Thunder is offered for sale as a breeding prospect, or alternatively she could go back into training.
A daughter of the winning Anabaa mare Mathanora, Distant Thunder went through the ring as a Tattersalls Book 1 two-year-old in 2018 when selling to Mags O'Toole. Meanwhile, her now two-year-old full-brother sold to Charlie Gordon-Watson for £85,000 at the 2019 version of the same sale, and is now in training with Charlie Fellowes and considered a very promising colt.
Mathanora, who amassed £25,000 in prizemoney during her career, is a half-sister to the US Grade-2 winner Little Treasure, who subsequently went on to foal three black-type winners including Grade-2 winning and multiple Grade-1 placed More Chocolate.
Other siblings of Mathanora include the US Grade-3 winner Keep Quiet and the Grp-3 placed Harem Lady, plus the dams of the Grp-3 Weld Park Stakes heroine New York Girl and Grade-2 Goldikova Stakes victrix Rhythm Of Light.
This outstanding page goes back to the Grp-1 Sussex Stakes and Grp-1 QEII Stakes winner and sire Bigstone, whilst astoundingly well over a dozen black-type performers can be found under the second dam Luminosity.
Not only does Distant Thunder hail from a prolific black-type producing tail line, but she could be one of the first mares by the tremendously exciting Night of Thunder to commence a career as a broodmare.
Night of Thunder won a star-studded running of the 2,000 Guineas in 2014 and then proved he had trained on as an older horse by landing the Grp-1 Lockinge Stakes the following year.
The son of Dubawi was retired to stud for the 2016 breeding season and has quickly demonstrated himself to be one of the most exciting young sires currently in service, despite his eldest progeny only being three.
His record-breaking first crop has featured an astonishing 14 Stakes winners thus far, including the Grp-2 Dante Stakes winner Thunderous, the Italian Grp-2 winners Auyantepui and Night Colours, and the Grp-3 Jersey Stakes winner Molatham.
These bewilderingly good early numbers have not been matched in the near 50 years history of the pattern, and as such Night of Thunder's progeny are extremely sought after in the auction ring. In the past 12 months his offspring have sold for figures including £575,000, 425,000gns, 360,000gns and 210,000gns, and there is every reason to believe the clamour for the produce of his daughters will be equally frenzied.
Distant Thunder is a wonderful filly of genuine quality, who is easy to do in all ways and has a very sound mind. She will no doubt prove a real asset to any broodmare band or racing yard, and she bidding starts at a very competitive level considering her promising relatives are bound to produce updates to the page in the near future.
