The Juddmonte homebred Rainbow Quest mare Behest is offered for sale; she is currently in foal to Jack Hobbs.
Purchased from Juddmonte as a three-year-old, Behest is a neat, athletic and well-made individual, standing approximately 16.1hh.
She was sound throughout her racing career, during which she placed on the flat and over hurdles, as well as finishing second on her only appearance over fences (when trained by the vendor). She has since had her attentions switched to breeding.
Although yet to be represented by a winner, her first foal Pamelita (by Sakhee's Secret) was placed 10 times as a two and three-year-old in Italy. Furthermore, her 2015-foaled Harbour Watch gelding Here In The Dark was placed in a six-furlong Ayr maiden on his two-year-old debut, and went on to finish a short-head second in a mile nursery at the same venue a few months later.
Behest has been utilised predominantly as a NH broodmare more recently, producing an unraced gelding by Mount Nelson in 2016, whilst she is currently carrying a foal to the 2015 Irish Derby winner and Derby runner-up Jack Hobbs.
Based at Overbury Stud, Jack Hobbs has been exceptionally well-received by breeders since commencing stallion duties in 2018 and is seen as the heir apparent to the recently retired Kayf Tara.
Indeed, he is the best horse to retire to the British NH breeding ranks since his former stud-mate, covering over 400 mares in his first three books and his progeny have already auctioned for up to €42,000.
Adding to Behest's breeding appeal is her very smart pedigree. She is out of the Listed-placed mare Keyboogie and a half-sister to the Japanese Grade-2 winner Smart Robin. Keyboogie is in turn out of the US Grade-2 winner and Grade-1 placed Key Dancer, whilst the family extends back within one more generation to well over a dozen black-type performers, including the Japanese Champions Dance In The Mood and Dance Partner.
It is also important to note that Behest provides breeders with what is now a rather rare opportunity to purchase a daughter of the great Rainbow Quest.
The 1985 Arc winner is one of the most distinguished broodmare sires in history, his daughters having provided countless top-class performers including Classic winners such as North Light, Kris Kin, Look Here, Footstepsinthesand and Kingston Hill.
This quiet and easily-handled mare has much to recommend her and the prospect of a foal by Jack Hobbs elevates her appeal enormously. She is being sold to make room for other stock, as her current owner is now concentrating on breeding for the flat.
