The three-year-old Lilbourne Lad gelding El Chico Mejor is offered for sale.
He was in training for four months with Liz Doyle in 2018, but was growing too fast to make a two-year-old, so was given the time he needed to develop.
A homebred, he gained many admirers at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale in 2017, but a superficial knee bruise put off buyers. That has fully healed and he has developed into a superb specimen, who stands 16.1hh and is now ready for the track.
Boasting an exciting black-type pedigree, El Chico Mejor is out of the King's Best mare Gimli's Treasure, who has previously produced the 78-rated dual seven-furlong winner Heir of Excitement. Now trained by Joseph O'Brien he still has plenty to offer, whilst another sibling by Jeremy has been sent jumping with Tim Vaughan and is due to run shortly.
The mare is a half-sister to the Grade-2 winning hurdler, Grade-1 placed chaser and 97-rated flat performer Manyriverstocross, from the family of Grp-3 Gallinule Stakes winner and Grp-1 Irish Derby runner-up Glyndebourne, multiple US Grade-1 winner Flying Spur and sibling Doncaster and Jockey Club Cup winners Great Marquess and Kneller.
Adding further lustre to the mare's profile is the fact that King's Best is the exceptional damsire of Grp-1 winners Amore Hass, Egg Tart, Queen's Trust, Mount Ormel, and Ervedya, whilst her Kingston Hill colt realised €18,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Breeding Stock Sale in 2017 to confirm her commercial viability. She will continue to add to the page in short order, as she has been scanned in foal to 2,000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand and a visit to exciting young stallion War Command is planned for later this year.
The sire Lilbourne Lad was a speedy two-year-old who won the Grp-2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh and was a narrow second in the Grp-1 Middle Park Stakes before being retired at the end of his two-year-old campaign.
He adds a pleasing element of speed to this dynamic pedigree, but he is more than adept at putting stamina to his stock also. His best performer to date is the Grp-3 winning nine/ten-furlong horse Dinozzo, whilst other notable progeny include the Listed winning miler Surrounding and the useful middle distance handicapper Southdown Lad. The sire can be expected to enhance the qualities inherited from the distaff side of this pedigree.
As the product of a dual-purpose pedigree of serious renown, the fact El Chico Mejor has been given a little time to mature is sure to be of enormous benefit in the years to come. He will surely reward this patience when new connections get him started on the track; he is this year's horse but also a horse for many years to come.
