BGC Racing is delighted to offer 10% shares in the high-class Shelford, who is in training with Kevin Frost in Staffordshire and is set to embark on a hunter chasing campaign. The £3,000 purchase price covers all costs until the 31st of March 2019, at which point a decision on the horse's future will be made.
Shelford began his career on the flat in Ireland, and was a mile and a half maiden winner before transferring across the Irish Sea. He went on to do well in staying handicaps in Britain, before having his attentions switched to hurdles when trained by Dan Skelton. He quickly ascended the hurdling ladder, winning the prestigious Grade-3 Silver Trophy handicap hurdle at Chepstow on just his third start over timber - defeating the Grade-1 placed Aubusson and multiple Graded scorer Vieux Lion Rouge in the process.
He continued in good form thereafter in season 2015/16, and would have been placed in the Grade-1 Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown but for a final flight mishap, before finishing a very creditable fifth at the Cheltenham Festival. He rose to a peak hurdles mark of 147 and was a Listed hurdle winner at Enghien in France, before being sent chasing the following season.
Getting off the mark on chase debut, he soon developed into a high-class handicapper, and in the summer of 2017 he finished a superb second in the Listed Summer Cup at Uttoxeter over three and a quarter miles, confirming that he had developed stamina in addition to his obvious speed. He was also placed in the Listed Summer Plate Chase at Market Rasen, before successfully returning to hurdles last season, including when sixth in the Grade-1 Ryanair Hurdle at the Aintree Festival.
A couple of below par efforts subsequently leave him rated 135 over hurdles and just 124 over fences, both marks which underestimate the considerable ability that remains at just nine years of age. He has recently moved to the upwardly mobile yard of trainer Kevin Frost, and it is hoped that he will be revitalised this winter by a hunter chasing campaign, with the Foxhunter at the Cheltenham Festival the ultimate goal.
Even if he doesn't make it to the race, BGC Racing will invite members to a box they are hosting at the track on raceday. This is a thrilling opportunity to get involved with a syndicate horse that is still capable of showing high-class form. Don't miss out !
