The highly progressive jumper Hoke Colburn is offered for sale. He is trained by Brian Barr from his picturesque base in Blackmore Vale, North Dorset, and is being sold to remain in the yard.
A son of the outstanding NH sire Beneficial, Hoke Colburn won a bumper on his second start and later added a victory in a novice hurdle, when trained by Harry Whittington. On his final outing for previous connections he had a spin over fences, and he hasn't looked back since joining Brian Barr in mid-summer.
On his first appearance for the team he was second from a rating of 106 in a Worcester novice chase, before putting in a fractionally sub-par effort at Southwell in September. He was then switched back to hurdles later the same month, finishing a good third at Worcester, before winning a Huntingdon handicap chase in mid-October from a mark of 106 by 10 lengths. That win came at two miles and seven and a half furlongs, and nine days later he was at it again, winning with authority in a Ludlow handicap - but this time over two and a half miles.
In that short spell Hoke Colburn demonstrated rare versatility, winning or running well over both hurdles and fences, over various distances, and at a variety of tracks. He has done his recent winning on good ground, but won his bumper earlier in his career on soft, which shows he is far from just a summer jumper but rather a horse that can continue to thrive well into the winter months.
His new mark of 113 looks well within reach, and as an improving young horse there is the potential for more to come. He is a full-brother to the Listed winning chaser Strawberry, who continued to improve with age, from the family of Grade-1 winning chaser Felix Yonger.
This progressive young horse is just getting started. As a consistent and versatile sort with a good attitude, it is exciting to contemplate where he might take new connections. Why not take the plunge and find out for yourself?
