The four-year-old Dick Turpin filly April Rising is offered for sale. A very good-looker with an appealing pedigree, she retains plenty of racing and breeding potential.
Unraced at two, April Rising was a creditable fourth on racecourse debut at Catterick last July, and followed that up with fair efforts at distances up to a mile and a furlong throughout the summer, before disappointing a little on her AW debut at Newcastle in October. She was immature and only learning the ropes last year and her best days clearly lie ahead of her.
Freshened up and given time to grow into her significant frame since her latest appearance, she is ready to go back into training if desired. She looks sure to benefit from a step up to a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half, where she will be able to use her long and rangy stride, whilst the handicapper has reduced her mark to a lenient-looking level from which she will surely be competitive.
Looking further down the line, April Rising also possesses good prospects should her attentions be switched to breeding. She is out of the winning Dansili mare Tomintoul Star, who is in turn a half-sister to the Listed-placed middle distance performer Bit By Bit and the prolific Fearsome, who has accumulated five wins in total (flat and jumps combined) during the winter months and is officially rated 91 on the level and 130 over timber.
This family traces back to a Juddmonte crafted line of exceptional quality, featuring within a few generations of Tomintoul Star such outstanding performers as Kingman, Oasis Dream, Beat Hollow, New Bay, Wemyss Bight, Zenda and Coastal Path.
With a breeding career in mind, it is worth noting that Dick Turpin's daughter Billesdon Bess auctioned for 800,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale last year, hinting at the potential he retains as a broodmare sire.
A strong and scopey mare, April Rising is a late-maturing sort who will surely go on from her current rating and come into her own on the track during the 2019 season. Combine that with her eye-catching long-term prospects and she looks a bargain at the advertised price.
