The eight-year-old broodmare Jessica Ennis is offered for sale, having been given a break from foaling duties this year. She is a daughter of Breeders Cup Turf winner English Channel and is related to multiple stakes performers on the dam side.
She was a highly rated filly when in training at the Derby winning yard of Michael Bell, but unfortunately injury forced her premature retirement. This hasn’t stopped her quickly making her mark as a broodmare. Her 2013 foal Indigo was a dual winner as a two-year-old, whilst her 2014 offering Bayston Hill was a winner at two and three-years at up to a mile-and-a-quarter.
Jessica Ennis has passed on real precocity to her progeny, as both her above foals demonstrate. This point is further reinforced by her latest foal to race, Heptathlete, who was a highly encouraging fourth at Kempton on her recent debut. She will remain in training next year with George Baker and is owned by the Hot To Trot syndicate, who rose to prominence this year thanks to the Grp-2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Heartache.
Jessica Ennis is out of the unraced Susie Cat, who is in turn a half-sister to the US Grade-1 winner Tactical Cat and the Grade-2 placed Storm Passage. Both of those horses were good enough to earn themselves covering duties as stallions, whilst Susie Cat has made a splash at stud thanks to multiple winner Susie Bee.
The sire English Channel, was a leading turf performer in the states at a mile-and-a-half and a six-time Grade-1 winner - including when ending his career with a spectacular seven-length win in the Breeders Cup Turf. He has translated that high level of ability to his progeny, with Grade-1 Travers Stakes winner V.E. Day being his headline performer thus far.
Jessica Ennis is a kind and straightforward mare with no vices. She has a Mukhadram colt foal and an Intikhab yearling who goes into training with Michael Bell for the Highclere racing syndicate. This is a rare opportunity to get hold of a broodmare of proven quality, with more years ahead of her than behind.
